New Delhi, June 02: Olympic silver medal shooter Rajyavardhan Singh and Chess Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand were leading contenders for the ’sportsman of the year award - 2004′ while Anju George and Sania Mirza were in line for the award in the sportswoman category.

The nominees for the award, by the Hero India Sports Academy, also included cricketers Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid.

Sehwag and Dravid may be the most popular among the four, but Rathore and Anand have more success last year to back their case.

Chess legends camping at USM

LONG BEACH - Three chess legends are coming to the Gulf Park campus of the University of Southern Mississippi July 6-8.

National Master Bruce Pandolfini, one of the inspirations for the book and movie Searching for Bobby Fischer, will offer individual and group instruction for students of all ages and skill levels.

He will also demonstrate his own talents during the three-day camp by playing 30 people simultaneously. Spots are still available for the exposition, and Pandolfini will autograph the boards afterwards.

“He’s very quiet, but super intellectual,” camp coordinator Nancilee Bodine said. “He’s respectful of other people and takes their questions very seriously.”
